Novruz in Baku and Azerbaijan 2027
Spring comes with fire: bonfires on four Tuesdays, green semeni on every table, sweets on the khoncha tray. Novruz is the brightest holiday of the year — and a great time to travel around Azerbaijan.

When Novruz is in 2027
Novruz is the spring equinox, which falls on 20 March in 2027. By the Labour Code Novruz gives five days off; Officeholidays lists 21–24 March 2027.
The final 2027 holiday schedule is approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, so the dates are preliminary.
Four Tuesdays
The holiday is prepared for a whole month. Each of the four Tuesdays before Novruz has its own element: Water, Fire, Earth and Wind. In 2027 they fall on 23 February and on 2, 9 and 16 March.
Bonfires are lit on the Tuesdays, and on the last one people jump over the fire.
Semeni, khoncha and sweets
The symbol of the holiday is semeni, sprouted green wheat. The table is set with a khoncha — a tray with sweets, painted eggs, shekerbura, pakhlava and gogal.
In Baku the holiday is celebrated in Icherisheher, the Old City: this is where Novruz lives in the streets.
Trips over the holidays
The Novruz days off are a good time for trips: Sheki with its old town, Gabala, Quba. Spring skiing is also possible — the season at Shahdag usually lasts until early April.
During the holidays many people travel, so book a car and a tour in advance.
