Holiday dates
In Azerbaijan 31 December is the Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis, and 1 and 2 January are New Year. In 2027, 2 January falls on a Saturday and by the Labour Code the day off moves to Monday, so the days off are expected from 31 December 2026 to 4 January 2027.
The final schedule is approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, so check the dates closer to the holidays.
The city of lights
In the evenings the three Flame Towers above the bay turn into living fire, and the Seaside Boulevard glows along the Caspian. Icherisheher, the Old City and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is especially beautiful in the lights of the winter evenings.
On New Year's Eve the city is busy and cars are hard to find. A car with a driver for the evening of the 31st is worth booking early — the driver waits nearby and takes you home after midnight.
Snow three hours away
The New Year holidays are the start of the ski season. Shahdag near Qusar is about 212 km from Baku and Tufandag in Gabala about 220 km, 3–3.5 hours each.
If you only have a day, take a day tour: Khizi, Quba and Shahdag or Gabala, 10 hours each with a car that waits for you.
Arriving for the holidays
The driver tracks your flight and meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign; 60 minutes of waiting are free. If the flight is delayed, the pick-up time moves with it.
Book transfers for 30–31 December and 1 January early: these are the busiest days of the year.
