Where to Stay in Baku: Best Areas for Every Trip

A neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood guide to choosing your base in Baku, whether it is your first visit, a family trip or business.

Book an airport transfer WhatsApp

For a first visit, stay in or right next to the Old City (Icherisheher) or around Fountain Square and Nizami Street: most sights, restaurants and the Seaside Boulevard are within walking distance. Families often prefer the Boulevard side, business travellers the White City, the Flame Towers area or Narimanov, and nightlife fans the streets around Fountain Square. Wherever you stay, the airport is about 20 km east of the centre, usually 30–40 minutes by car.

Old City (Icherisheher)

The walled Old City, home to the Shirvanshahs' Palace and the Maiden Tower, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most atmospheric base in Baku. Small boutique hotels and guesthouses sit in quiet lanes, and you step out straight into history. The trade-offs are cobbled, sometimes steep streets and limited car access to some lanes, so ask your hotel in advance where a car can drop you with luggage. The tourist information centre at 55 Boyuk Gala Street is open daily 10:00–19:00.

Fountain Square and Nizami Street

Just outside the Old City walls, this is the pedestrian heart of modern Baku, lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. It suits first-timers who want to do everything on foot and travellers who like to be out in the evening, which makes it the best pick for nightlife. From December to mid-January the square hosts the annual New Year charity market.

Seaside Boulevard and Sabail

The long waterfront park along the Caspian is the easiest area for families: flat promenades, the 60 m Baku Eye Ferris wheel, the State Puppet Theatre and plenty of space for children. Hotels near the Boulevard put you within a short walk of both the sea and the Old City, and some offer views over the bay.

Flame Towers and Highland Park

Above the Boulevard, the area around the Flame Towers and Highland Park has the best views over the bay and the city. A funicular connects the lower town with Highland Park (1 AZN, as of 2026). It suits travellers who want a quieter, more upscale stay and do not mind a short ride or funicular trip into the centre.

White City

A newer, planned district with modern apartment blocks, offices and wide streets. It works well for business trips and longer stays, especially if you prefer apartments. It is calmer in the evenings, so plan on a short taxi or transfer into the centre for dinner.

Narimanov and Ganjlik

North of the centre, these residential districts usually offer better value and good metro links. The Heydar Aliyev Center is about 7 km northeast of the Old City, near Narimanov metro, and Baku Zoo is also in Narimanov – a plus for families.

Coastal resorts: Sea Breeze, Shikhov, Novkhani

Resort hotels on the Caspian coast suit beach holidays and families who want pools and space. The trade-off is distance: you will rely on a car to reach the city, so factor transfers into your plans.
