Azerbaijan with Children: A Family Travel Guide
Where to go with kids in Baku and beyond, which sights are free for children, and how to keep transfers easy.
Azerbaijan works well with children if you keep the days short and the logistics simple. In Baku, spend time on Seaside Boulevard and at the renovated Baku Zoo; outside the city, Gabaland in Gabala is open all year and Shahdag adds snow in winter. Many state-run sights are free for foreign children under 12, and a private car with child seats takes most of the stress out of getting around.
Baku with kids
Seaside Boulevard is the easiest place to start: a long, car-free promenade on the Caspian where children can run while adults rest. The Baku Eye, a 60-metre Ferris wheel, turns slowly enough (around 30–40 minutes per rotation) for younger children, and the State Puppet Theatre is also on the Boulevard.
Baku Zoo reopened on 7 October 2021 after about four years of reconstruction and now has 125 species. It has a petting zoo, pony rides and a playground. It is open 10:00–19:00 on weekdays and 09:00–19:00 at weekends and on holidays, at 39 A. Bakikhanov Street in the Narimanov district; tickets are sold through iTicket.
Older children usually enjoy the funicular up to Highland Park, with the Flame Towers above and the bay below, and the Old City, where the lanes feel like a maze.
Free entry for children
From 1 January 2026, foreign adults pay 15 AZN at sites run by the State Tourism Agency, including Yanar Dag, Ateshgah, the Sheki Khan’s Palace, Kish church and the Diri Baba Mausoleum, while foreign children under 12 enter free. This was reported by the news agency Report.az, so check at the ticket desk.
Day trips that work for families
Gabaland in Gabala is a 16-hectare amusement park on Heydar Aliyev Avenue, open all year. Gabala is about 3.5 hours from Baku by car, so it is better as an overnight stay than a same-day return with small children. Lake Nohur, about 5 km away, is a gentle extra stop.
In winter, Shahdag gives children their first snow; the ski season usually runs from December to about mid-April. For a shorter outing, Absheron’s fire sites and the mud volcanoes near Gobustan make a good day without long drives.
Child seats and safety
4T provides child seats on request; tell us your children’s ages when booking so the right seats are fitted before pickup. According to local news reports, Azerbaijan’s road traffic law requires children under 12 who travel in the front seat to use a special child restraint. Whatever the exact rule, we recommend that children ride in the back in a proper seat.
Family tips
- Book a minivan: strollers, suitcases and car seats take more room than you expect.
- Keep day trips short and plan breaks; your driver can stop whenever a child needs it.
- Pack a warm layer even in spring and autumn, because Baku’s wind can be strong.
- Carry water and snacks for longer drives into the mountains.
- Avoid Mondays for museums; several, such as the Carpet Museum, are closed.
With 4T Transfer
4T Transfer has looked after families since 2018. From the airport to central Baku, a 5-seat minivan costs $18, a 6-seat standard minivan $25 and a Mercedes V-Class $50, per car, with meet and greet in arrivals, flight tracking, 45 minutes of free waiting and help with luggage. For flexible days, a car with driver for 10 hours costs $120 in a Mercedes E-Class or $145 in a V-Class. Private day tours start at $90. Child seats are available on request, and we answer on WhatsApp 24/7.
