Mingachevir is a city on the Kura River beside Azerbaijan’s largest reservoir (about 605 km² and up to 70 km long). The city was built after the Second World War together with the hydroelectric power station, partly by around 10,000 German prisoners of war. People come here to walk along the Kura promenade, swim in the “Mingachevir Sea” in summer, eat fish and see the Kur rowing centre. People lived here more than 5,000 years ago, and excavations have produced finds from the Eneolithic to the 17th century.

How to get there from Baku

  • By car: 272–323 km depending on the source, about 3 h 55 min from the Baku International Bus Terminal.

Rome2rio suggests an ADY train from Biladjari to Goran station, twice a day, about 3 h 7 min, $5–12; the city is about 17 km from the Baku–Tbilisi line, so you continue on your own from there. There is also an interregional Ganja–Mingachevir–Ganja train. Check timetables on ticket.ady.az.
  • By bus: from the Baku International Bus Terminal roughly every 3 hours, 5 h 15 min to 5 h 35 min, about $7. Mingachevir bus station is 5–7 minutes from the centre.

  • Mingachevir Hydroelectric Power Station and Dam — built in 1945–1953: an earth dam 80 m high and about 1,550 m long, 401.6 MW, the largest hydroelectric power station in the country. About 20 minutes, viewed from outside.
  • Mingachevir History Museum — founded in 1968 and reopened after reconstruction in 2016; many exhibits were found during construction of the power station, and about 400 are on display. Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, closed on Mondays; one source (WhichMuseum) lists it as temporarily closed for restoration. About 1 hour.
  • Kur Olympic Training Centre — a rowing base on the Kura, opened in 2010. It hosted the canoe sprint of the 2015 European Games and the rowing of the 3rd CIS Games in 2025. About 30 minutes, viewed from outside.
  • Sahil Park — the most famous of the city’s 10+ parks, by the water, with leisure and speed boat rides. About 1 hour.
