Baku to Balakan: How to Get There and What to See
Balakan lies 393–453 km from Baku in the far north-west of Azerbaijan. Its Juma Mosque minaret looks over the Alazan Valley, and in late autumn the town is all about persimmons.
Balakan is the most north-westerly district centre of Azerbaijan, near the borders with Georgia (Kakheti) and Dagestan. Its main sight is the Juma Mosque of 1867–1877, whose 44–45 m minaret looks out over the Alazan Valley and the Caucasus. The district lives on tobacco, silk farming and orchards; Balakan is the main persimmon area, and a persimmon festival is held here in late October.
