Absheron & Gobustan Tour
Ateshgah Fire Temple, Yanardag burning mountain, Gobustan rock art and mud volcanoes.
Gobustan National Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with thousands of ancient rock carvings showing people, animals and boats.
Near the reserve are the mud volcanoes — bubbling cones of cold mud, one of the most unusual natural sights in Azerbaijan. After rain an off-road vehicle may be needed.
Gobustan is about one hour south of Baku along the Caspian coast. The rock art museum and the petroglyphs are reached by an asphalt road; the mud volcanoes are a few kilometres further along a dirt track.
Spring and autumn are ideal. In summer, visit in the morning — there is little shade on the rocks.
The petroglyphs date back up to 40,000 years. Comfortable shoes are recommended; the walking trail is about 1 km.
