Balakan is the most north-westerly district centre in Azerbaijan, close to the borders with Georgia and Dagestan.
By road it is about 393–453 km from Baku, roughly 4 h 50 min – 5 h 50 min.
Visitors come to see the 19th-century Juma Mosque with its 44–45 m minaret, and in late October for the persimmon harvest and festival.
One car takes you from your door all the way to Balakan, with your luggage in the boot and short coffee stops on the way.

Can we continue from Balakan to Georgia via Lagodekhi?
Land entry into Azerbaijan has been closed since 2020, and the exit rules for foreigners after 1 October 2026 are not confirmed. Check the current rules before you plan the crossing.
Can we stop on the way?
Yes, a short stop for coffee, food or the toilet is normal on long routes. If you want a longer stop or a detour to a sight, tell us when booking so we can agree it in advance.
